Diary of Two VERY NOVICE flower growers… Wednesday 7th June 2017

Here at Lower Blakemere we do have a lovely walled garden that we renovated back in 2004. It’s now packed with flowers fruit and herbs which we use in our bouquets and for weddings. The wildflower area is gorgeous and at the moment we are harvesting oxeye daisy and campion. However, most of our delightful #grownnotflown British Flowers come in four times a week from 10 flower farmers and one wholesaler. This gives us a huge variety of blooms, and plenty of resilience against crop failure and weather issues… However, we have dabbled in growing more for a few years – and have produced a good crop of Dahlias, Sunflowers, and Crocosmia. However, this year we have invested in a little Kubota tractor and Rob and Heather are trying their green fingers out… From their experience so far there are several challenges…. Rabbits, Bugs, Birds, Mud, Weeds, Nettles, Thistles to name but a few but even more of a challenge is… TIME! Nevertheless, so far thousands of stems of Alchemilla mollis have been harvested and today we were really pleased to harvest Nigella… which was very handy as we had a request for a bouquet for a famous actress who adores white wild flowers… Having experienced plenty of weeding over the past few weeks the team has a real love of Mypex which will mean we can plant more and weed less… We’re enjoying ourselves and choosing all plants on the following basis: 1: EASY to GROW 2: GOOD FOR CUTTING Watch this Space To order your lovely British Posy – order here
